Welcome to Bratislava
Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia and entrance gate to this small, eastern European country, is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Slovakia. Bratislava is not only a city of history, culture, delicious gastronomy and wine but also a city where you can relax and have a great time.
Bratislava is a city with a long history and an exquisitely renovated historical centre brimming with baroque palaces, fountains and romantic streets. Like Budapest and Vienna, Bratislava was also a coronation town. The most flourishing period was an almost three hundred year period starting in the second half of the 16th century when the city was the coronations site for Hungarian kings.
The town
Bratislava is situated on both banks of the Danube, at the base of the outlying spurs of the Little Carpathians, in a position of strategic importance near the Devín Gate. The area includes the Old Town centre. The historic centre is characterized by many baroque palaces. The Grassalkovich Palace (built around 1760), for example, is now the residence of the Slovak president, and the Slovak government now has its seat in the former Archiepiscopal palace, the former summer residence of the archbishop of Esztergom.
A curiosity is the underground restored portion of the Jewish cemetery where Rabbi Moses Sofer is buried. This is located at the base of the castle hill near the entrance to the tram tunnel on the Danube side.
The only military cemetery in Bratislava is Slavín, unveiled in 1960, in honour of Soviet Army soldiers who fell when liberating Bratislava from German troops. It also offers an excellent view of the city and the Little Carpathians.
Various sports and sports teams have a long tradition in Bratislava, with many teams and individuals competing in Slovak and international leagues and competitions. Many significant sporting events, such as World and European Championships, have been held in Bratislava.
