SRB/BRA - Dominant Serbia too strong for Brazilians

BRATISLAVA (FIBA U19 World Championships for Women) - Serbia continued their march towards a double U19 basketball celebration with an 82-57 win over Brazil in the eighth-finals of the FIBA U19 World Championships for Women.

Serbia, who won the equivalent men’s event earlier this month, led from the first basket as Brazil could find no response to their opponents’ dominance in every area of the court.

The South Americans were wasteful from outside the arc, sinking just two three-pointers from 14 attempts (14.2%). Angela Braghin was particularly culpable in this respect, failing to find the target with five efforts from downtown.

A 12-0 scoring burst gave Serbia a 13-point advantage at the end of the first quarter and Jelena Milovanovic almost single-handedly kept that lead intact with 10 points in the second period to make it 40-24 at the halfway stage.

The third was the only truly competitive quarter, Brazil actually edging Serbia in terms of points on the board, but the Serbs rediscovered their aim in the final 10 minutes.

They outscored their rivals 24-14 thanks in no small part to Andja Ivkovic, who poured in eight points in five minutes on her way to a total of 11 at the buzzer.

Brazil’s Clarissa dos Santos was the star of the game with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Milovanovic finished with 20 points.
