BRATISLAVA (FIBA U19 World Championship for Women) - Brazil hit two 10-point scoring bursts to pull back a deficit and beat Canada 75-70 in the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women eighth-finals.
The North American side had controlled the early exchanges but were left reeling from an 11-1 hit in the second period and a 12-2 blast in the final quarter.
There was little in the stats to separate the sides either. Indeed Canada will feel aggrieved that they lost despite proving more accurate from two-pointers and free throws.
Canada spread the points evenly in the first quarter, with no player netting more than once but still taking a 17-4 lead within seven minutes.
Ariani Souza then almost single-handedly got her side back in the game, pouring in 11 second-quarter points, including five as Brazil came from 27-17 down to 30-28 up in just over five minutes.
The third period was nip and tuck with neither side able to get the upper hand and, going into the crucial final 10 minutes, Canada's lead was just six points at 50-44.
The South Americans hit another purple patch then though, sinking 12-2 to take a 62-60 lead.
Five points from Patricia Teixeira extended this to 71-64 with 02:47 on the clock and although Canada got back within two points, Souza made two free throws and Brazil held on for victory.
Those last-second points took Souza to 20 points for the game, ably assisted by Nadia Gomes, who sunk 15 points and nine rebounds.
Miranda Ayim got 16 points for the defeated Canadians.
