BRATISLAVA (FIBA U19 World Championship for Women) - Hosts the Slovak Republic staged a late rally to see off Spain 67-57 in a Group A match in the U19 World Championship for Women.
Spain took the first quarter 18-13 but the hosts went ahead after taking the second period 20-10.
Back came Spain to level the match at 46-46 at the end of the third quarter. However, it was the Slovaks who prevailed as they took the final period 21-11.
The heroine for Slovakia was Janka Mincikova who was outstanding.
She hauled down 10 boards in addition to her 20 points, both game-high efforts for the 18-year-old.
Although she was eight from eight from the charity stripe, her shooting was more wayward in open play with three from 11 from close range and two from five at three-point range.
Nikola Kovalova (15), Regina Palusna (14) and Lucia Krc Turbova (11) also made double digits.
Tamara Abalde Diaz (12) and Gabriela Ocete (11) were the only players to do so for Spain.
Slovakia are top of Pool A with four points while Spain share second spot with Korea while Argentina are bringing up the rear.
